Event and location info

About the location

Otherworld 2009 will be held approximately 25 minutes outside of Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island (1.5 hours from Victoria). Some driving on a gravel road will be required.

The land is a privately-owned hobby farm/campsite in the midst of the British Columbia rain forest. There is a small, shallow stream on-site (not really suitable for swimming, but enough to get wet!) and a nice waterfall nearby.

Event Entry:

  • There will be 10 tickets at the door for $120. This option may be removed without notice
  • Entry hours on Friday, June 18 will be between 10am and 12 midnight.
  • Entry hours on Saturday, June 19 will be between 10am and 6PM.
  • There will be no access to the site outside of there hours unless you make a special arrangement.

What the event provides:

  • A safe space for you to come and express yourself at an event guided by the 10 Principles of Burning Man.
  • Art grants are available to participants who want to create art to bring to the event. Funds for the art come from ticket sales... and this is the reason these events EXIST.
  • Theme camp placement for groups of people who would like to bring an interactive camp that has specific needs in terms of space at the event.
  • A Ranger team made up of volunteers attending the event who make themselves available to offer non-violent conflict resolution services.
  • A Peer Support tent space staffed by compassionate members of the Ranger team.
  • A community-driven sculpture (effigy) which may be burned, safety pending.
  • A safe & facilitated fire show with designated safety personnel in which all performers may participate (after attending a fire safety workshop).
  • Portapotties sufficient to meet the needs of all participants for the weekend.

The event DOES NOT provide:

  • Vending of any kind. Nothing is for sale on-site
  • Food - you must bring all the food you will need for the duration of the event.
  • Water. You must bring all the water you need for the weekend.
  • There are no showers on site (or running water of any kind).
  • There is no electricity. If you need power, please bring a generator.
  • No entertainment is provided. It is the job of all participants to contribute by bringing art, theme camps, and performances to make the event fantastic!

What you should bring:

  • Food.
  • Water for drinking, bathing, and cleaning dishes.
  • Shelter
  • Art, performances, theme camps, jokes, pranks, experiments, science, a sense of wonder, and more!
  • Anything and everything else you need to survive, be comfortable, and enjoy yourself.

Some important things to remember:

  • There will be NO TICKETS AT THE DOOR!
  • Parking is limited, please carpool!
  • No pets are allowed on site. This is an active hobby farm and outside pets are not permitted.
  • You will be asked to park your vehicles separately from your camp site.
  • There will be DESIGNATED SPACES for RVs or vehicle camping. Please notify us in advance if you intend to camp in your vehicle by contacting Ashes@csto.org.
  • This is a LEAVE NO TRACE event. There will be no garbage service - please take all of your trash and personal belongings with you when you leave.
