Grants

Otherworld exists for the purpose of creating and showcasing interactive art of all kinds. We want you to bring your art to Otherworld, so a portion of the ticket proceeds has been set aside to financially support art. Participation Grants will be available to anyone who is participating at Otherworld by bringing some form of art (that has a physical cost attached): theme camps, workshops, interactive art, and whatever else you want to do! In order to receive a pARTicipation grant, you need to submit an application.

What does a pARTicipation Grant cover?
Grants will cover materials only. Your labour is your gift to the community. It is preferred that you develop various kinds of non-monetary resources (i.e. Supportive and imaginative friends, reusing/recycling supplies). This effort encourages collaboration and cooperation within our extended community. You’ll be surprised at what you can get if you just ask! We may fund up to 100% of materials based on your proposal.

How are art projects selected for a pARTicipation Grant?
Decisions will be based upon the following criteria.

  1. The creativity of your project
  2. The interactivity of your project
    • Interactive art is:
    • Art that requires human interaction to complete the piece.
    • Art that prompts people to interact with one another.
    • Art that responds to participants and to its environment.
    • Art that causes people to reflect on the larger community.
    • Art that challenges the viewers’ traditional perspective on art.
    • Art that belongs to the public and exists for the benefit of all.
  3. The thoroughness of your proposal.
  4. The team. Do you have an adequate crew to build, install and clean up your project?
  5. The Budget. Is the budget realistic?
  6. Reusability of your art at Burning Man or at other events or locations.
  7. Durability. It’s not the desert but your art will be seen, touched, and used by participants.

When is the money distributed?
Grants will be paid upon receipt of expense report and corresponding receipts. Blank cost reports will be provided to all grant recipients. You must provide copies of all receipts in order to receive the full grant amount. If your cost report or receipts do not add up to the full grant amount, the amount of the grant awarded will be reduced to reflect actual costs.
